80% of Sun Belt Cities Have Hard or Very Hard Water — vs 0% in the Northeast

An analysis of 155 US cities in the YoHomeFix Water Hardness Index reveals a sharp geographic divide: 80% of Sun Belt cities (AZ, TX, NV, NM, UT, CA, FL, OK, AR, LA) have water hardness above 120 mg/L CaCO₃, compared to 0% of Northeast cities. The average water hardness in Sun Belt cities is 194 mg/L — more than double the Northeast average of 88 mg/L.

For the millions of Americans relocating to Sun Belt states, this means a significantly higher risk of scale-related plumbing failures: narrowed pipes, premature water heater burnout, and recurring drain blockages. 49 cities in the dataset have "very hard" water (above 180 mg/L), nearly all located in the Sun Belt and Mountain West regions.

Methodology & Data Limitations

Data Source & Provenance

Water hardness values in this dataset were compiled from publicly available municipal water quality reports, utility-published consumer confidence reports, and third-party water quality databases that aggregate utility data. Values were collected during 2024–2026 and represent a representative hardness level for the municipal water system serving each city.

Provenance Tiers:

  • Tier A — Verified from utility CCR: 18 cities cross-checked against official municipal Consumer Confidence Reports or utility-published water quality data. These values match or closely approximate the utility's own reported average.
  • Tier B — Compiled from public databases: Values sourced from publicly available water quality aggregators and regional data. These are representative figures that align with the utility's stated hardness range but have not been individually verified against the primary CCR.
  • Tier C — Representative estimates: Values based on regional geology, water source type, and known hardness patterns for the utility's service area. These are approximate and should be treated as indicative rather than precise.

Unit of Measurement

Hardness is expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L) as calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) equivalent, the standard unit used by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and EPA for water hardness reporting.

Classification System

Cities are classified using the USGS-aligned hardness scale:

  • Soft: 0–60 mg/L CaCO₃
  • Moderately Hard: 61–120 mg/L CaCO₃
  • Hard: 121–180 mg/L CaCO₃
  • Very Hard: 181+ mg/L CaCO₃

Plumbing Risk Score

The composite plumbing risk score (3–10) combines three factors that independently affect plumbing failure frequency: infrastructure age class (aging/mixed/modern), winter freeze risk (high/medium/low), and water hardness class. A higher score indicates greater cumulative risk of plumbing failures. This score is a comparative index, not a probability prediction.

Limitations

  • Hardness values are representative of the municipal system and may vary by neighborhood, season, or water source.
  • Private well water is not represented in this dataset.
  • Values may not reflect real-time conditions; municipal hardness can fluctuate with source water changes.
  • The plumbing risk score is a relative index for comparison purposes, not a clinical or engineering assessment of any individual property.
  • Infrastructure classifications are based on dominant housing stock characteristics and may not reflect newer or recently renovated areas.
  • Not all values have been individually verified against the primary utility report. See provenance tiers above for the verification status of each value.
  • We do not claim that EPA supplied individual city hardness measurements. The EPA SDWIS provides system-level data that contextualizes our compiled values.

What Water Hardness Means for Your Home

Soft

Minimal scale buildup. Lower risk of pipe narrowing and appliance efficiency loss. Potential for slightly higher corrosion in older copper pipes due to lower mineral buffering.

Moderately Hard

Moderate scale accumulation over time. Annual water heater flushing recommended. Showerheads and aerators may need periodic descaling.

Hard

Significant scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and fixtures. Water heater efficiency declines noticeably within 2–3 years without maintenance. Scale-related drain blockages become common.

Very Hard

Severe and rapid scale accumulation. Tank water heaters may lose 30%+ efficiency within 3 years. Pipe diameter narrowing accelerates. Whole-house water treatment strongly recommended.

Includes all 155 cities with 17 variables: water hardness, infrastructure class, winter risk, pipe material, sewer system, soil type, dominant failure mode, and computed risk scores.

Methodology

Water hardness values represent representative mg/L CaCO₃ for each municipal water system, compiled from publicly available utility Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs), utility-published water quality data, and the USGS water hardness database. 18 cities are verified against primary utility CCRs (Tier A); remaining values are compiled from public databases (Tier B) or estimated from regional geology and water source type (Tier C).

Infrastructure class is assigned based on the predominant pipe era and material in each city's housing stock: aging (pre-1970 dominant construction), mixed (1970–1990 transition), modern (post-1990 dominant).

Plumbing risk score is a composite (range 3–10) combining infrastructure age (1–3), winter freeze risk (1–3), and water hardness tier (0–3), plus a base point. Higher scores indicate greater likelihood of plumbing failure.

Hardness classification follows USGS standards: Soft (0–60 mg/L), Moderately Hard (61–120), Hard (121–180), Very Hard (181+).
